What is travel liability insurance?

Travel liability insurance provides worldwide insurance cover abroad as personal liability, which is particularly important for longer trips abroad.

Anyone who does not have personal liability insurance with worldwide coverage should definitely take out travel liability insurance for trips abroad. The conclusion is possible up to the day of departure.

How easy it can happen during a stay abroad that you cause a personal injury, property damage or financial loss. This can happen in an accident, through inattention or through any other circumstance. In any case, you may be subject to high claims for damages, which will then be asserted against you.

Benefits and duration of travel liability insurance

Travel liability insurance covers the costs of damage caused by you for the duration of the trip abroad. This applies to any trip within the period of validity.

The benefits are generally the same as for private liability insurance in Germany.

  • Benefits in the event of bodily injury: up to the amount of the agreed sum insured caused by the insuredperson during a trip.
  • Benefits in the event of damage to property: coverage for damage to property caused by the insured person during a trip (including vehicles or other objects).
  • Benefits for pecuniary loss: reimbursement of costs up to the agreed sum insured, for damage to the property of others caused by the insured during a trip.

What do I need to know about travel liability insurance?

The travel liability insurance does not cover any costs if you, as the insured person, intentionally cause damage to property or personal injury!

      What does the insurance cover include?

      The insurance cover includes the legal liability from the risks specified in the insurance policy and its supplements. The insurance cover does not apply to risks arising from the keeping or use of motor vehicles, aircraft or watercraft subject to insurance.

      What does the travel liability insurance not cover?

      Not insured are:

      • Loss of third-party private apartment keys
        - If the keys were not lawfully in the custody of the insured person
        - If the damage amounts to up to 150 €
        - Consequential damage resulting from the loss of keys (e.g. burglary)
        - Keys to movable property, including safe and furniture keys, if the damage amounts to up to € 150
        - loss of keys from keys provided by the host school
      • Keeping or use of motor vehicles, aircrafts or watercrafts subject to compulsory insurance
      • Holding and use of a vehicle
      • E-scooters (the holding or use of e-scooters subject to insurance is not insured)
      • Third-party property that has been rented, leased, rented or borrowed
      • Triggering of a false alarm at the fire department and police department
      • Postage costs for sending bills
      • Other damage to property

      What is personal injury?

      A personal injury occurs when an injury to another person, impairment of his or her health, or his or her death results from an event that causes the injury.

      Example of personal injury during a trip:

      While on a cycling vacation in Majorca, you attempt to overtake another cyclist. In doing so, you accidentally bring him down. The other cyclist falls and suffers a serious head injury.

      What is property damage?

      Property damage is damage caused to the property of another person. It occurs when a thing is damaged, destroyed or lost without intent.

      Example of property damage during a trip:

      In a 5-star hotel in Dubai, you accidentally knock over an expensive vase. The hotel demands compensation in order to repair or replace the damaged vase.

      What is a financial loss?

      A financial loss occurs when someone suffers a direct or indirect financial loss due to your fault.

      Example of a financial loss on vacation:

      Your child accidentally causes a fire alarm during a vacation in Italy. As the parent or guardian, you must pay for the pecuniary loss caused and bear the costs of the false alarm.
