Erasmus+

Why do I need student travel insurance for the Erasmus program?

Reliable health insurance is essential during your Erasmus stay as it offers you protection and security. Here are the main reasons:

  • Cost control: protects you from high medical bills.
  • Comprehensive protection: Covers doctor visits, medication and repatriation.
  • Worry-free travel: Focus on your experience, not risks.
  • Local assistance: Helps you find medical facilities.
  • Cover for activities: Protection in the event of accidents during travel and leisure.

Erasmus funding program

How do I become an Erasmus student?

The EU's Erasmus funding program is open to students of all disciplines who are regular students at a participating college or university.

Prerequisites:

  • Students from EU countries and some non-EU countries (program countries) can participate in all measures of the funding program.
  • Students from other partner countries only under certain conditions.

Application and funding

The Erasmus coordinators at the college or university provide application information for all students. Important questions to ask when applying are

  • Which country?
  • Which university?
  • How is the whole thing financed?
  • What are the reasons for applying?
  • What are your language skills like?

Whether your application will be successful also depends on the availability of places. When selecting your preferred destinations, also consider smaller host universities as alternatives.

Who pays for Erasmus?

Scholarship holders do not pay tuition fees, but receive monthly funding from 490 euros - depending on the country. Erasmus funding is tax-free. The costs for the Erasmus program are financed from the EU budget (Euro).

Insurance cover

What insurance do I need as an Erasmus student?

Students who spend a semester abroad as part of the Erasmus program must have health insurance abroad. This applies both to German students abroad (e.g. USA) and to foreign students studying in Germany.

We offer Erasmus students comprehensive health and travel cover for up to 5 years abroad with our international health insurance for students.

For a safe semester abroad, we recommend taking out an additional property package consisting of emergency, liability, accident and luggage insurance as all-round insurance cover. This way, you can travel with a clear conscience and don't have to worry about your health - or your wallet.

Studying abroad

Why take out international health insurance as a student?

In European countries with which a social security agreement exists, you are covered by your statutory health insurance. This requires the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your health insurance company.

However, this cover does NOT apply to countries that are not in Europe or do not belong to the EU.

In the event of sudden illness abroad and if you are dependent on medical care or in the event of an accident requiring hospital treatment, the health insurance from your home country often does not apply. If you don't have appropriate travel insurance abroad, you may be faced with four- or five-figure costs, which is not uncommon in the USA, for example.

Our tip: before starting your semester abroad, check exactly which benefits are covered and which are not. In this way, you can ensure that you have sufficient health insurance abroad that is tailored to your individual needs and, in particular, to the duration of your stay abroad.

Scope of services

What does international health insurance for students cover?

Medical treatment + repatriation

Travel health insurance for students covers the most important costs for medical treatment, whether outpatient or inpatient. It also covers the cost of medication and repatriation home if this is reasonable and justifiable from a medical point of view. If students or language students need to be treated after an accident or due to an illness, the international health insurance will generally cover these costs.

Without travel health insurance, you will always bear the costs for this repatriation - regardless of whether you are in a Schengen country or not, as your statutory health insurance does not generally cover medical transportation from abroad.

Overview of student health insurance benefits for semesters abroad:

  • Assumption of costs for medical treatment abroad (outpatient/inpatient)
  • Assumption of costs for medication
  • Additional costs for repatriation incl. repatriation of luggage
  • Repatriation of the insured person in the event of death
